What regulations do I need to follow?
The handling of biological agents is subject to the regulations set forth in the German Biomaterials Regulation ( Biostoffverordnung.)
If the agents are:
- Human pathogenic organisms, a permit must additionally be obtained as per Section 44 of the German Protection Against Infection Act (Infektionsschutzgesetzes)
- Animal pathogenic organisms, a permit must additionally be obtained as per Section 2 of the German Animal Pathogens Ordinance (Tierseuchenerreger-Verordnung)
- Plant pathogenic organisms, a license as per Section14a of the German Phytosanitary Ordinance (Pflanzenbeschauverordnung) may be required. More information and additional recommended precautions are provided by Germany's Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants - Julius Kühn Institute.
If organisms are to be genetically modified, or if genetically modified organisms are to be obtained, researchers must ensure compliance with German genetic engineering laws zu beachten.
