In his research, supported by the Alexander von Humboldt foundation, Gruia Badescu inquires about possibilities of realizing cultural diversity in various european cities and is concentrating on the role of city planners and architects as well as on activities of civil society and art projects. Badescu defines "syncretic place-making" as the process of shaping contemporary architecture and city design, which draws inspiration from various traditions and celebrates the diversity of memories and identities. By analyzing this practice he examines the interlocking of agendas of urban development and societal change in order to create a spatial-material dimension for civic strength.
