As a visiting student, you will be enrolled at the University of Konstanz for a specific study period without completing a degree.
These options are available:
1. Students at a German university
If you are already studying at another German university, then you can also become a visiting student at the University of Konstanz.
If you are not enrolled at a university, then you cannot apply as a visiting student. In this case, you apply as either a first-year student or guest auditor at the University of Konstanz.

How do I apply?
1. Register at zeus.uni-konstanz.de
2. Please choose the degree "free mover"
3. Please select your desired subject (temporary studies) and complete the online application.
If necessary, please contact the relevant department in advance.
2. Participants in exchange programmes or university partnerships
If you are an international student and are interested in becoming a visiting student through an exchange programme (e.g. Erasmus) or university partnership, then please apply through your home university. As soon as you have been nominated by your university for the exchange, please follow the guidelines of the International Office of the University of Konstanz.
3. Free movers
Your time as a visiting student at the University of Konstanz can be completed as a free mover, if you
- are an international student and
- are not nominated to become a visiting student through an exchange programme (e.g. Erasmus) at the University of Konstanz and
- are not enrolled at a partner university of the University of Konstanz
You can usually complete one or two semesters at the University of Konstanz as a free mover.
Important!
If you are not currently enrolled at another university, then you cannot become a visiting student at the University of Konstanz.

How do I apply?
Complete the online application form and upload PDFs with
- a brief CV,
- a letter of motivation,
- a current certificate of enrolment,
- a current transcript of records and
- proof of your German language skills (at least B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
In order to enrol, you generally have to appear personally at the university shortly before the start of the semester. Further information about enrolment would be included in the letter of admission. If you are not an EU/EEA citizen, you will need to get a valid residence permit or a provisional permit from the foreigners registration office (Ausländerbehörde).
4. Student research stay
Students enrolled at German and international universities can apply to complete a research stay at the University of Konstanz. Research students can be enrolled upon request if they have been admitted by one of the university’s departments and their stay lasts for a minimum period of three months.
If you are interested in completing a research stay, you must first identify a potential supervisor at the University of Konstanz and contact him /her yourself.
You will be enrolled for a maximum period of two semesters. During your research stay, you cannot complete any other coursework or performance assessments.
You can apply at any time. There are no application deadlines.

- Submit your application along with the required documentation to the University of Konstanz.

If you are not currently enrolled at another university, then you cannot become a visiting student at the University of Konstanz.
5. Visiting doctoral researchers
If you spend time at the University of Konstanz during your doctoral studies, you are eligible to enrol as a visiting student. The duration of a visiting student's stay is usually limited to two semesters.
If you are interested in completing a research stay you must first identify a potential supervisor at the University of Konstanz and contact him/her yourself. You can apply at any time. There are no application deadlines.

- Complete the request for admission as a visiting doctoral researcher,
- Attach the required documentation,
- Submit your application along with the required documents to the University of Konstanz (via the Welcome Center).
