Accepted or rejected?
The teams of the "Forschungsverwaltung" (research funding administration) and Research Support will assist you in both cases
Your grant application has been accepted
Congratulations! If you have not yet conducted the "Drittmittelverfahren" (external funding process) you will have to do so now. Otherwise, the university cannot create a “Kostenstelle” (university billing account) to administer project funds. The team of the "Drittmittelverwaltung" (administration of external funding) will assist you with all matters concerning the financial administration of your project.
Rejected?
We are sorry to hear that. Some funding bodies allow for re-submission of a grant application. Study the information you received carefully. Many organisations will send you evaluations or excerpts of evaluations which explain the rejection decision. It might be worthwhile to re-write an application if the feedback you received is generally positive.
Rules on resubmission of the most important funding bodies
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)
It is not advisable to resubmit a proposal as it is. You will, however, receive excerpts of the reviews for your application and the final decision of the Review Board. Read these carefully as they will usually give you a good indication of whether a re-written and re-drafted application would have a chance of success. If you resubmit an application, we recommend to include a seperate document in which you outline the changes that you have made.
Funding by the federal government
You can only submit a proposal anew that has been rejected if there is a new call for applications. Apart from the scientific review, applications with the federal government are usually subjected to a thorough financial review. It is likely that the executive agency will have questions regarding your budget. You will have to answer the executive agency's questions and agree on a budget with them before you receive a positive funding decision.
Fritz Thyssen Stiftung
The Fritz Thyssen Stiftung (foundation) does not accept resubmissions.
VolkswagenStiftung
The VolkswagenStiftung usually does not accept resubmissions. Since the foundation does not collect written reviews, you will not receive feedback in writing. We suggest calling the person in charge and asking for feedback on the phone. If you receive a "rejection in the present form" ("Ablehnung in der vorliegenden Form"), you will receive a letter containing the reviewers´ comments and get the opportunity to state your view; after which the final decision will be made.
European Union: ERC Grants
A new application (for the same project) is possible in a new call. Please note that the re-application rules may change from call to call - check the requirements in the current guide for applicants carefully.
European Union: Consortia
No re-submission in the same call. If a new call contains a topic suitable for your project, you can submit a new application.
European Union: Erasmus+
You may re-apply to a new call. Study the reviews that you have received for the rejected project carefully and adress them in your new application. This will be evaluated favourably. Please check carefully whether rules and guidelines have changed and make sure that you are using the correct templates and eForms!
