The Volkswagen foundation funds Lichtenberg professorships in order to promote exceptional scientists and scholars in innovative teaching and research fields and to strengthen Germany’s profile as an excellent location for science and learning. The programme focusses first and foremost on early career researchers with two to three years of research experience after earning their doctorates. It is also open to scientists and scholars whose doctoral research was completed some time ago and, in exceptional cases, even internationally well-known researchers.
