University of Konstanz again ranks among the top universities in Germany

The latest "Open Edition" Leiden Ranking was recently published based entirely on freely accessible data. As in the regular edition, the University of Konstanz ranked first in the two categories "Open Access" and "International Collaboration". Konstanz reaches new heights among Germany's top ten universities in the category "Scientific Impact".

The second annual "Open Edition" of the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2024, was based entirely on freely accessible data. In two categories, the University of Konstanz placed first in the national comparison of 57 universities: for its proportion of Open Access publications and for its proportion of joint publications with international partners. During the period from 2019 to 2022, 82.7 percent of all Konstanz publications were Open Access.

By global comparison of 1,506 universities, the University of Konstanz ranked among the world's top ten to twelve percent in the categories Open Access (120th place) and International Collaboration (172nd place).

Scientific Impact: Reaching new heights among Germany's top ten universities.
Compared with the previous year, the University of Konstanz also jumped into the top 10 in Germany for the third category "Scientific Impact". This category assesses the universities' proportion of frequently cited academic publications in relation to publications in the same periods and disciplines. In the worldwide comparison "Scientific Impact", too, Konstanz climbed to a new position among the best 20 percent.

In the regular edition of the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2024, the University of Konstanz had already achieved top rankings and placed first in Germany for the categories "Open Access" and "International Collaboration". From the start, Konstanz has led the field nationwide in the first category, placing first in all 14 evaluation periods since the initial ranking that assessed the years 2006-2009.

The Open Edition of the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2024 compares the research contributions of 1,506 universities from 72 countries based on their publications in the period from 2019 to 2022. In contrast to the regular CWTS Leiden Ranking 2024, which uses data from the paid-access citation and literature database "Web of Science", the Open Edition is based on freely accessible data from the platform OpenAlex. This way the information can be accessed by everyone, which makes the results more transparent.
