Bats use an acoustic cognitive map for navigation

Echolocating bats have been found to possess an acoustic cognitive map of their home range, enabling them to navigate over kilometer-scale distances using echolocation alone.

This finding, recently published in Science, was demonstrated by researchers from the Cluster of Excellence Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour at the University of Konstanz Germany, the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, Tel Aviv University, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel.

Diversity and Inclusion play an important role in research projects at the Cluster of Excellence "The Politics of Inequality". For example, Christina Felfe de Ormeño studies whether diversity in the classroom automatically leads to greater tolerance among school students.

Other studies examine potential ways to reduce the gender pay gap or focus on gender-specific differences in applying for a promotion.

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and the European Union has set itself ambitious targets to become climate-neutral by 2050. A new policy paper from the Cluster of Excellence "The Politics of Inequality" at the University of Konstanz now shows that acceptance of EU climate policy strongly depends on the inclusion of social policy measures.

The latest "Open Edition" Leiden Ranking was recently published based entirely on freely accessible data. As in the regular edition, the University of Konstanz ranked first in the two categories "Open Access" and "International Collaboration". Konstanz reaches new heights among Germany's top ten universities in the category "Scientific Impact".
