New Policy Paper: AI at the workplace

Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly important role in the world of work. But how widespread is AI in German companies, and how do employees view this development? Are they more concerned or optimistic? Ann Sophie Lauterbach and Florian Kunze examine these questions in the latest policy paper from the Cluster of Excellence “The Politics of Inequality” at the University of Konstanz.

Resonant-force-induced symmetry breaking in a quantum parametric oscillator

A parametrically modulated oscillator has two opposite-phase vibrational states at half the modulation frequency. An extra force at the vibration frequency breaks the symmetry of the states. The effect can be extremely strong due to the interplay between the force and the quantum fluctuations resulting from the coupling of the oscillator to a thermal bath. The force changes the rates of the fluctuation-induced walk over the quantum states of the oscillator. If the number of the states is large,…

Open-ed on the Future of Asylum Law in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

The adoption of the third generation of EU asylum legislation has been celebrated as a historic breakthrough. Notwithstanding the significance of these measures, developments within Germany and at the European level indicate that further reflection about the way forward is warranted, thus transcending the widespread focus on the path-dependent continuation of complex procedure in individual cases which had been designed by the classic destination countries in Northern Europe and was projected…
