Top position nationwide in the 2024 CWTS Leiden Ranking

Once more, the University of Konstanz holds top position nationwide in the 2024 CWTS Leiden Ranking for the categories "open access" and "international collaboration".

In the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2024, the University of Konstanz once again achieved top rankings. With first places in the categories "Open Access" as well as "International Collaboration", the university repeated its success of previous years.

This year, the University of Konstanz also made it into the top ten universities with the most influential publications (category "Scientific Impact" – proportion of a university's publications that were among the ten percent most frequently cited): place 9 among the 57 German universities included in this ranking, improving its position by 7 places (place 16 in 2023). Internationally, too, the university made a huge leap to place 273 out of a total of 1,506 universities – 115 places better than in 2023. This puts the University of Konstanz in the top 20 percent worldwide in terms of this indicator.

Pioneer in open science
The University of Konstanz's decades-long commitment to freely available academic publications and the wide range of advisory and support services are reflected in its top national ranking in the area of Open Access. With first place in the "Open Access" category of the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2024, it continues to lead the top field of German universities – unchallenged since the category was created. In the global ranking, the university places 123th, an excellent position among the top ten percent of universities with the highest proportion of open access publications.

"Since 2003, the University of Konstanz has promoted Open Access publications through institutional memberships in Open Access initiatives, and, since 2009, through a university publication fund for Open Access. "We are delighted that this commitment has once again been recognized with the top position in this year's Leiden Ranking". In the future, the University of Konstanz plans to expand its services by further developing its own publication services.

Worldwide research network
The large number of publications written in collaboration with colleagues from abroad clearly shows the major role that international cooperation plays at the University of Konstanz. For the fifth time in a row, the University of Konstanz places first nationwide in the "International Collaboration" category. In the worldwide comparison, too, the university achieved a fantastic result with place 164 out of 1,506 universities in the ranking. The results reflect the outstanding global networks of Konstanz researchers as well as the success and visibility of their top-level international research.

About the CWTS Leiden Ranking
The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2024 compares the research contributions of 1,506 universities from 72 countries based on their publications in the period from 2019 to 2022. In order to take part in the ranking, a university's researchers must have published at least 800 English-language articles (subject-specific or review articles) in journals listed on the "Web of Science". Universities cannot apply themselves to be included in the ranking.
