With the report, decision-makers receive a relevant database to identify and further develop fields of action in the promotion of young talent. The data from both surveys is now also available in the controlling data portal [Link] and can be filtered by subject, programmeme type, nationality and gender.
Important results:
The majority of doctoral candidates are enrolled in a structured doctoral programme (62%). This proportion has changed only marginally in recent years.
The financial situation of doctoral students has recently improved. 76% of those surveyed financed themselves through an academic position. The proportion of scholarship holders has decreased significantly since 2016 (2016: 27%, 2021: 10%). Four out of ten respondents stated that the funding for their doctoral project would be adequately secured.
The supervision of doctoral students at the University of Konstanz continues to be rated as high quality. Almost two thirds of those surveyed reported that they received constructive feedback on their work and were able to discuss it with colleagues in regular colloquia. 64% of the doctoral students were (very) satisfied with the supervision by their main supervisor.
On average, doctoral students need 4.7 years for their doctoral project. Three quarters of the doctoral candidates stated that they needed more time for their doctoral project than initially planned.
With a few exceptions (5%), all doctorate holders were employed about 1.5 years after completing their doctorate. As a rule, those with a doctorate were (very) satisfied with their professional situation (82%).
The respondents were (in retrospect) predominantly (very) satisfied with the doctorate at the University of Konstanz. This applies to 65% of doctoral students in the winter semester 2020/21 (doctoral students: 85%).
