Expert joins integration commission
Konstanz-based law professor Daniel Thym joins the federal government’s “Fachkommission Integrationsfähigkeit” to assess developments in migration.
The integration commission is considered so important that its establishment has been agreed on in the current coalition agreement of the two governing parties. One of the twenty distinguished persons with research and practical backgrounds appointed to the national commission is the Konstanz legal scholar Professor Daniel Thym. He is a much sought-after expert in the field of immigration and asylum law who will contribute to a report on the conditions required for integration that will be submitted to the German Bundestag in 2020.
The report will cover current migration developments in Germany from economic, labour market, social and demographic perspectives. In addition, it will make recommendations on how to address key integration issues in the short and medium-term. These will especially address standards for public administration and for creating legal norms for successful integration.
The analysis will not only cover recently arrived migrants, but also all groups of migrants including those who have lived in Germany for a longer period of time already. It also will extend to conditions in the “host” society related to integration policy, because both migrants and the societies they join play an important role for integration. The commission will address topics such as language, the labour market, education, social issues, values and municipal integration policy.
Daniel Thym has been a professor of public, European and international law at the University of Konstanz since 2010. He is co-director of the Research Centre Immigration & Asylum Law (FZAA) in the university’s Department of Law, which cooperates with the Cluster of Excellence "Cultural Foundations of Social Integration”, where Daniel Thym is also a principal investigator. He has been a member of the Expert Council of German Foundations on Integration and Migration (SVR) since 2016.
